Looking for a free word search online? Start with Daily Word Search for a daily letter grid, or choose Word Search for themed vocabulary. Both ask you to find words that are already hidden in a grid, so you can begin by reading the word list rather than inventing guesses.
Choose your word search
| Game | What you choose | A useful starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Word Search | A 12×12, 14×14 or 16×16 puzzle | Choose 12×12 if you want fewer cells to scan |
| Word Search | A vocabulary theme, such as Animals, Food or Space | Choose a familiar theme so you recognize the target words |
The game pages explain how to launch each player. When a page asks for permission to load a third-party game, review that choice and then use Start Game. Loading and available controls depend on the provider and your browser.
How to find words without losing your place
Start by reading the complete list. Pick a word with an unusual letter or a distinctive pair of letters. A word containing Q, X or Z can be easier to locate than a word made entirely of common letters, although the actual grid matters more than the rule of thumb.
Scan one row at a time for the first letter. When you find it, look for the second letter in the directions allowed by the puzzle. Only follow a direction farther if the second letter matches. This avoids tracing several cells along a line that could never contain the word.
For example, imagine the target is PLANET. If you find P, check the surrounding cells for L. A P followed by A is not a candidate for that direction. Once P-L matches, continue with A-N-E-T. Select from the first letter to the last when the whole sequence is correct.
After finding a word, return to the row where you stopped. If you keep jumping to the most eye-catching part of the grid, you can inspect the same cells repeatedly while missing an entire corner.
When a word seems impossible to find
Recheck the spelling against the list before scanning again. Then check whether the game's instructions allow backward or diagonal words. Do not assume that every word-search game uses the same directions. A word may also share letters with another answer, so a previously used cell is not automatically ruled out.
If your selection is rejected, compare every letter along the line and make sure the selection ends on the final letter. On a small screen, switching to a larger view can make the endpoints easier to select. The available display controls vary by game.
Word search or word guessing?
Word search is about locating a supplied answer. A word guessing game asks you to discover an unknown answer from feedback. If you prefer testing a hypothesis with each move, try our word guessing game guide. If you want more vocabulary puzzles, browse the word games collection.
Common questions
Which grid should I start with?
Daily Word Search offers three grid sizes. Start with 12×12 to reduce the area you need to inspect, then move to a larger grid when you want more searching. Grid size alone does not determine difficulty: vocabulary and word directions also matter.
Is this a printable word search or a generator?
These links open browser games. They do not provide a custom worksheet generator or a downloadable puzzle PDF. Choose them when you want to find words on screen.
Is Wordle a word search?
No. Wordle-style games use guesses and letter feedback rather than a grid containing a supplied list. Our Wordle Game currently uses six-letter answers and six tries; check its rules before you start.
